The End of Your Arrogance - Chapter 21.1
A few days later, Evelyn was invited by Rene and headed to the Magician’s Tower again.
“My Lady, we are heading here this time.” Rene led Evelyn to another room instead of the drawing room. She winked at the rest of the party. “I have prepared refreshments in the drawing room, so please wait there.” After everyone had left, the two were left alone.
“Is this where you work?” Evelyn asked as she looked curiously at a huge bookshelf. Seeing the desk in front of it, she burst into laughter. The desk, tea table, and even the floor was littered with papers, which was Rene-like.
“It wasn’t as bad… You have no idea how much work His Highness has given me!” Rene complained, and Evelyn smiled at this. Rene asked her in a quiet voice, “My Lady, do you know how to look at documents?”
“What kind of papers?”
Evelyn’s eyes rounded at her unexpected question.
“We’re looking into the missing person cases that occurred in the Dukedom,” said Rene. She pointed to the piles of parchment on the desk. Evelyn’s face turned white as she gazed at the mountain of documents.
“I don’t know if I can do it alone…”
“I’ll help! Of course, I will help.”
As Evelyn looked at her in pity, Rene broke into a smile.
“Then let’s get started.”
With a flick of her finger, Rene sent a flurry of parchments careening across the desk and onto the tea table.
“My Lady,” she said, “please look over the documents over there.”
Soon, the room was filled with the sound of parchments turning and the scribblings from a quill. As the two wrestled with the mountain of documents, the sky and earth darkened and rain began to pour. Rene and Evelyn, who had their noses in the papers, raised their heads in surprise at the sound of rain.
The piercing sound of a child’s cry rang through the tower.
Evelyn and Rene ran to the drawing room. There, two men whose sizes differed but looked alike were in confrontation. Ilya’s arm was twisted in an unnatural position behind his back. At the end of it, Livell was dangling dangerously.
“Why, you! Let go, already!”
Livell bit Ilya’s finger and did not let go. The eagle was watching the two with curious eyes from the side. It was in stark contrast to the way Belina and Arthas were hopping in anxiety beside him.
“Livell!”
Surprised, Evelyn ran to her son. When he saw his mother running to him, Livell let go of Ilya’s finger and spread out his arms.
“Mom!”
Ilya frowned, “Despicable!”
Livell stared at Ilya for a long time with bright eyes. He quickly turned his head away, apparently losing interest. Evelyn picked up her son and handed him over to Arthas. Seeing Livell rubbing his face against Arthas’s cheek, Ilya shuddered in bitterness.
“Your Highness, are you all right? You’re bleeding…” Evelyn approached her husband and asked with a worried face. Nazz, who had followed Ilya, exploded in laughter.
“Why would you poke the Young Master’s cheeks when he was obviously asleep?”
Evelyn looked up at Ilya at Nazz’s words. Even his neck was flushed in red as he shouted back at him, “Nazz, shut up!”
Rene let out a chuckle, then broke into laughter. She decided to rescue her poor lord from being teased.
“My Lady, there is a first aid kit in the room where we were working earlier. It’s the second drawer under my desk. Would you apply some medicine for Your Highness?”
“Yes, okay.” Evelyn placed her hand on her husband. “Let’s go.”
Ilya obediently followed her. Evelyn sat him on the sofa and brought out the first aid kit. She sat down next to him and examined his wounds. His fingers, which had sharp teeth marks, looked painful just to look at.
“I’m sorry,” she said, “he must have been surprised to see a stranger.”
“It’s fine.”
Evelyn carefully wiped off the blood with a clean cloth. She took out a bottle of herbal powder, mixed it in a greenish liquid, and carefully applied it to the wound. She was sitting so close Ilya could hear every breath, and this made him very nervous.
“Does it hurt?”
He snapped out of it at the worry in her tone.
“This is…nothing,” he muttered.
Evelyn felt herself relax at his usual self.
“What happened?”
Ilya hesitated for a moment, but he soon spoke with a sullen voice.
“He was sleeping when I came in. He looked just like me so I…” Ilya trailed off, “poked his cheeks.” In truth, he had poked Livell because he was grumpy that someone who looked the same as him was enjoying quality time sleeping early in the evening.
“He doesn’t like it when he’s touched when he’s sleeping,” Evelyn smiled. “I also got bit a few times. I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize for that.” Ilya turned his head in embarrassment. Even that simple movement reminded her of her son. Evelyn looked at him with dejection and lowered her head.
