Please Support My Revenge - Chapter 29.1
Jade was left speechless by Lobelia’s sharp retort. Her words cut through him like a knife, leaving him reeling in confusion.
“Don’t mind me?” she repeated, unable to believe what he was hearing. Lobelia’s calm demeanor only served to further irritate him.
He couldn’t bear the thought of his guest being insulted by his people. Anyone else in his position would have stepped out, but Jade remained ignorant of the severity of the situation.
As Lobelia tried to maintain her emotionless façade, Jade’s frustration boiled over, and he raised his voice in exasperation.
“Aren’t you angry?” he demanded, hoping to elicit some kind of emotional response from her.
But Lobelia remained stoic, and Jade couldn’t help but wonder how someone like her could be so calm in the face of such blatant disrespect.
Lobelia recalled the stories he had heard about Jade Ferado before his curse. A talented and popular man from a flawless family, he had been chosen as the next duke over his older brother.
In contrast, Lobelia seemed like an entirely different breed of person. It was strange to see the two of them standing face to face like this, unable to comprehend each other’s reactions.
“I am not angry,” Lobelia replied coolly. “These are people who don’t matter to me at all.”
Jade was taken aback by her response. How could she not care about the insults hurled at his guest? He was about to speak up again when she cut him off.
“I don’t mean that,” he heard himself say, his voice laced with anger as he took a step closer to her. “You have been unfairly insulted.”
The question in his eyes was plain to see. Why wasn’t she as outraged as he was? Why didn’t she react the way he expected her to?
As Lobelia and Jade struggled to understand each other, it was clear that they were two very different people from two very different worlds.
Jade observed Lobelia’s behavior at the Opera House and concluded that she was a strong woman who didn’t need anyone to take care of her. Although her cake had been rejected, she regained her composure and returned to her usual pace. Jade believed that they should maintain a moderate indifference towards each other, but then came this absurd situation.
Jade couldn’t help but wonder, “Who the hell is this woman?”
He realized that he knew very little about Lobelia. Everything she had shown him so far had been an act. He had never seen her true essence.
“I’m telling you just in case,” Lobelia said directly to Jade, her tone calm and firm.
“I am not interested in anything other than getting my fair share back. I mean, I don’t care what people who aren’t involved in revenge say about me or how they treat me.”
Jade widened his eyes in disbelief. Her words made no sense to him. “So, me…?”
Lobelia hesitated before speaking, carefully considering her words. “You don’t have to treat me like a decent human being. Please consider me as a contract partner only. As long as the terms of the contract are properly fulfilled, that’s enough, right?”
Jade’s expression hardened as he looked at her, his eyes fixed on her face. Lobelia didn’t back down. She stood firm, not moving a single step.
Jade felt that he had to assert himself, to let her know that he was okay. He had to act as if this situation were nothing to him. That way, Lobelia wouldn’t be able to shake him anymore.
“Why do you want to take care of everything by yourself and make me look like a scoundrel?”
Lobelia flinched, stung by his words. Jade noticed her reaction, but Lobelia was not an easy opponent.
“Duke, why are you trying to be considerate of me even while arguing? We are just in a contractual relationship. It’s not personal. Once each of us achieves our goals, we’ll turn around and live like everyone else.”
Lobelia breathed a sigh of relief as she observed Jade’s return to his usual cold, emotionless self. His once expressive face had transformed into a controlled, tight-lipped mask, and the absence of any hint of intimacy between them meant that their relationship would no longer pose a threat to Lobelia.
Silence hung in the air between them for a moment, as Jade needed time to organize his thoughts, just as Lobelia had predicted. Eventually, Lobelia spoke up, informing Jade that he had work to do in the study.
“Take care of it and come. I’ll wait here,” she instructed.
Despite the fact that Hilda and three other maids were waiting in the adjacent room to decorate her for an upcoming event, Lobelia declined. She was eager to tend to Jade’s treatment and retire to her own quarters.
